Tenniskids Programme at
City of Derry Tennis Club
City of Derry Tennis Club this week revealed plans for their junior tennis programme, Tenniskids. Having got the club website up and running, the club committee are now anxious to start developing grass roots tennis in the city and have put in place a junior coaching programme to run on Saturday mornings in St Columb’s Park. The coaching sessions are directed by club coaches and specifically designed for children from 5-17 years of age and will run throughout the spring and summer. Each week children will learn and develop the raw skills for tennis to get them enjoying the sport. For older kids who have played before, the sessions will be focused on advanced drills and match tactics.
Anyone interested in these sessions can find further info on cityofderrytennis.co.uk and register online or just turn up at St Columb’s Park Tennis Courts. Registration for primary school kids begins at 945am for those who have not preregistered. Secondary school players are asked to be at the courts at 11am. There is no course fee for the sessions and each session costs just £2.50. The course begins this Saturday 28th April.
New Junior Club
Tuesday night saw the very first Junior club night at City of Derry Tennis. The club offers an ideal opportunity for junior players who want to get in some match practise and hone their tennis skills. Each week there will be mini tournaments and plenty of fun and games directed by the club coaches. The action kicks off at 6pm every Tuesday night in St Columb’s Park.
The main club nights are Monday and Thursday nights from 6pm and the club is always on the lookout for new members regardless of age or ability. Adult coaching is soon to begin in the park and anyone interested is asked to register their details online.
Why play tennis?
- It gets you fit.
-
Tennis is a mixed team sport as well as an individual sport and can be enjoyed by everyone.
- It is a low impact sport that is not too hard on ageing muscles or joints.
- Its cheap to play: 40 pounds would pay for a decent raquet and a set of balls.
- You can make loads of new friends.
