09 July 2007 Cityside v Waterside - The Result.
Another great afternoon's fun was had by all who took part in the second rubber of the City versus Waterside match at St Colunmb's park courts. The rivalry built up in these matches is unmatched and certainly as captain of the Cityside team I want to pay tribute to the excellent effort put in by all our team on Saturday last.
After some very competitive games we held a 4 point lead going in to the last series of matches. It was only after some dramatic last minute substitutions by our opposition and the arrival of fresh legs in the shape of ace in the hole Paul Mc and his sidekick Fahad, never say die, Falahha that we had to give best to the folk from the other side of the Foyle.
More power to captain Jimmy L , you pulled out all the stops and eked out a dramatic victory.
To our team I say again well done Mickey, Kieran, Gemma, John, Peter, Sandra, Anne, and Caolain. Thanks for showing up and putting out!
Thanks also to Karen for the superb organization and to chairman Ron for his excellent stewardship and for the wine. It was great.
I recommend you all make the next round of this event. It's great fun.

City of Derry Singles Championship 2007
This year the singles tournament will be based on the round robin format as
seen in some of the ATP events this year. Each player will be given a grade,
these gradings will be advanced club player(a)/ developing club player(b).
It is envisaged that there will be four/five people in each group made up of
at least 2 advanced club players. Each player in each group will play round
robin against each other. Matches will be best of 3 tiebreak sets. For every
set won, players will receive 2 points regardless of whether or not a player
wins the overall match. A bonus point is awarded if the loosing player is
within 2 games of the victor (6-4 7-5 or 7-6.) and to the victor of every
match.
For example- If Paddy plays Billy and Paddy wins 7-6 2-6 6-4. Paddy would
receive 5 points for the 2 sets won and the bonus point for winning, Billy
on the other hand would receive 4 points for match.
After all the matches are completed, the top two players in each group will
go forward to the Super 8. This is a knockout competition- quarterfinals
followed by semis and a final. Matches are once again best of 3 tiebreak
sets. For those who don’t finish in the top two of each group, they will
proceed to the plate competition and a knockout tournament will ensue.

Cityside vs. Waterside
The first round of the wildly-anticipated East bank versus West bank competition took place on Thursday 17th May. Typically, the weather was forecast to shower us with rain for the entire evening, but this did not put off the two dozen club members who arrived to show their loyalty to their home turf. With five out of six courts in use, the two captains, Jimmy Logue and Mark Moroney, had a tough time making their encouragements heard, but managed to slip in some fighting talk during the break!
The City side claimed to be at a disadvantage, due to the fact that a few of their top players were missing on the night including their top player Peter Fryer. However the waterside suffered too, with Anderson McClintock missing, Paul McClintock carrying an injury and Captain Jimmy Logue complaining of a toothache! For the City side Mickey Rooney survived a low blow from Karen Campbell in the first match of the night. Six rounds were played altogether, with every game counting towards the final score for both teams.
Everyone fought tooth and nail and thoroughly enjoyed the competitive games. The final score was 65 to the Cityside and 86 to the Waterside.
Many thanks to everyone involved, the great food and refreshments were enjoyed by everyone. Let’s hope the Cityside put up a better fight in the second and third rounds of the competion!
Tennis Juniors
City of Derry Juniors
The City of Derry Junior Tennis club is thriving, each week more and more
players are attracted to the St Columbs park courts for some great tennis
and even better craic. The club started about 3 weeks ago and already have
10 members playing weekly, honing their skills and talents. Many also go to the tenniskids coaching programme on Saturday mornings
directed by club coach Peter Fryer. Grassroots tennis is certainly looking
healthy and the club hope that all these players will eventually progress
onto senior competitive tennis for the City.
